Before relaying this story I would like to point out that this was the second time I have been left in charge of a hostel while the manager has gone away for a few days.
I got up at 3am to redistribute some fluids and noted that all of the lights were on at the restaurant next door – no big deal? Next I got up at 7.30am to say good bye to a crowd of French dudes that were catching the first bus.

Lots of swearing was my response as I'm told that that during the night three men entered one of their rooms, flashed a gun and amazingly did nothing because the occupant (French) started shouting? I was quite surprised that simply shouting had sent them running. Feeling thoroughly hollow and confused I returned to my room.
Upon arrival I noticed a knot in the clothes line that hangs low in front of my door; the knot increased the height of the line and no longer made it a snagging hazard if one was to leave my room in a hurry. Gouged at the potential significance of this I paced around my balcony. What's this written on the wood next to the (frequently used) outdoor plug point;

Confused and frightened I went for a surf and upon my return I heard that there were eight heavily armed police in the restaurant next door. Obviously as the 'manager' I had to report this; so I found them and in my (laughable) Scottish accented Spanish relayed the story as above.
It was then I found out that we were part of a bigger party as they owners of the restaurant next door had been tied up by 5 masked men and robbed of pretty much everything of value (along with a portion of sexual assault). As the police relayed the story they stressed the lengths the robbers had gone to not make any noise – the clue.
So in my view at some point 3 of them left the restaurant and came over to my hostel for a bit of extra. Came up to my room, found it locked and not wishing to make any noise by breaking the door down searched for one that was unlocked and occupied.
If that is so then at what point did they tie the knot? Just before they tried the door? And when did they write their tag? Who knows – did they wait around for a while on my balcony?
The question – do you think the armed robbers at my door? Some people here didn't think so.
My answer – I don't know, but thank the lord I locked my door..
I probably should have left Popoyo after this?
