The guide books say this is only to be attempted by seasoned backpackers with a good grasp of Spanish. Well that sounds like a challenge and I couldn't fly because I'm travelling overland/sea round the world!

Long story short: After numerous police checkpoints for all the bent cops to stop the bus for their cut, the border arrived. (Note, no other backpackers or English speakers on the bus). My understanding was that it was one checkpoint, one passport control. In fact it was one checkpoint but it had two passport controls, 150m apart. I found that out after I stopped running.
Anyhow I completed the first passport control and left the 'hut' to see my bus about 150m down the road, leaving without me, all my bags on it? One thing to do; run!
Focused only on the bus I sprinted straight through what turned out to be a second checkpoint. Past the guards and towards the bus while lots of people were cheering and shouting? At the time I thought they were laughing about the gringo that might miss his bus. It was actually that I had just sprinted through the boarder into Colombia - probably a miracle I wasn't shot.
