Captain Calamity

Beautiful but dodgy
Because of the impenetrable Darien Gap, the thin strip of land between South and Central America, there is a roaring trade in yacht trips for backpackers over to Panama.

My options? Join the $400 queue, with my sailing experience?

“Don't you know that I have just sailed across the Atlantic”

Flashed my sailing CV and blagged my way onto a weeks charter over to Panama via the San Blas Islands as 1st Mate; cost me $150.

I think that I'll sum up this captain's approach via the following two tales.

1) The first boat I've been on yet with no safety or trip briefing. As we set off into the night none of the 5 guests knew that we wouldn't stop for another 35 hours.
2) We set off one morning into a big sea. Concerned after noticing a few other details I checked the waterline hatches (windows just above water level). Open, water coming in.
